Visualizing Canadian Demographics - 2
This graph shows the population of various age brackets in Canada over time. Source data comes from Statistics Canada.
This graph combines the age brackets into larger groups:
- under 5
- Workers: ages 25-64
- Seniors: ages 65+
This graph shows some interesting pattersns:
- After the baby boom in the 1950s, the number of children under five has been roughly constant. One would perhaps expect the birth rate to increase with the tremendous rise of the 25-35 age bracket. However, we clearly see that this is not the case.
- The working class has grown tremendously -- more than can be explained by the echo of the baby boom. About half the people in Canada are in of working age.
- The number of seniors has risen more slowly than workers, however the seniors will eventually overtake the working age bracket (switching the y-axis to a logarithmic scale will help to visualize this trend).
