metro

This project started off mostly as streets and buildings. I tried modelling my own cars with CSG. They looked rather cartoonish, so I tried a few other methods, none of which looked good when viewed close up. I then discovered PoseRay, which allowed me to convert 3DS Max and Lightwave car models into the POV-Ray mesh2 format.
Car models were collected from:
DMI Car Models
Max Realms
3DM
Marlin Studios

Rush Hour
While looking around for inspiration, I came across a photo on the Internet of a busy street in New York. The street was filled with people, cars, and buildings - three of my favourite subjects. The cars and buildings were pretty straightforward, but how was I going to render hundreds of people?

I devised a system of "billboards" - transparent planes on which images of people are placed. This method allowed me to save hundreds of megabytes of memory per person.

The breezeway
I like the play of light and shadow in the breezeway at my workplace, so I
decided to model it (with a few artistic liberties). The cars and trees are
third party models and the people are from DAZ. Everything else is CSG.

The intent of this scene was to experiment with radiosity settings
(something I'm still learning).

A closeup of the foreground women in the breezeway. I used MegaPov's aoi feature to try simulating sub-surface scattering for her skin.

A residential street
I created a number of macros to easily create the houses. The trees were from XFrog Public Plants. Unfortunately, the trees are so detailed that they take up several hundred megs of memory.

A dirty alley
Shopping Trip
"Are you sure we parked in this row?"
As an experiment, I thought I'd try seeing what kind of scene I could put together in a few hours using all the macros I had written for the metro project.. I had macros to generate the buildings, trees,  and one to create a populate a parking lot with a random distribution of cars. I reused two models (Victoria and Michael) from "The Intersection."
The background is a little sparse and needs more work.
The Intersection
Added 3d people using DAZ|Studio and a different point of view to include the intersection. Added traffic lights and some better textures. All of the 3d models (especially people) really taxed my computer. The total memory used was approx 1.8 GB!
A zoomed in version of "The Intersection" showing more detail.
Overtime
Some poor guy is working overtime, his lonely car waiting in the empty parking lot
The daylight version of "Overtime." I think this scene needs to be populated with people.
The trees are from Gilles Tran's MakeTree macro. Cars are collected from the internet.
Added people, some newspaper vending machines, a few improved textures and a mist to desaturate some of the colours. The people are 2D images mapped onto a thin box and positioned so they point towards the camera.
Unfortunately, they aren't scaled properly, so some of them appear disproportioned.
